As part of its commitment to transparency and accountability, in 2013 Plan International USA became one of the first U.S.-based international non-governmental organizations to commit to openly publishing its information as part of the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI).

IATI is a voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiative that seeks to improve the transparency of aid in order to improve coordination, reduce duplication, and increase effectiveness in tackling poverty. IATI brings together donors and developing countries, civil society organizations, and other aid experts who are committed to working together to increase the transparency of aid and thus hold those involved in receiving and implementing funding more accountable.

“Almost 200 organizations have committed to a common standard and time schedule for publishing aid information under the International Aid Transparency Initiative. This is great news for transparency advocates,” said Tessie San Martin, CEO of Plan International USA. “Our commitment to publishing to IATI standards is driven by principle: How can we advocate effectively for transparency and increased accountability if we are not willing to walk the talk?”

IATI began its work by consulting developing country stakeholders about their information needs, then discussing with donors the most efficient and effective way of meeting these requirements. On the basis of these consultations, IATI developed and agreed upon a common, open standard for the publication of aid information – the IATI standard. Donors and aid organizations implement IATI by publishing their aid information in IATI’s electronic format – usually on their websites – with a link to a central registry, which acts as an online repository or index of links for all of the raw data published to IATI.

As part of Plan International USA’s IATI commitment, we have developed an open information policy that guides what we publish and how. It also indicates how Plan will respond to public requests for information about our work.
