Sudan

Sudan is a northeastern African country bordering the Red Sea and located between Egypt and Eritrea. Almost all of the Sudanese population lives in the southern half of the country, as the northern half of the country is covered by the Sahara Desert. The nation has two official languages: Arabic and English, and approximately 42% of the Sudanese population is under the age of 14. Sudan is the world’s largest producer of acacia gum, which is used in the food industry, in glue, as the binder for watercolor paints and in incense. While 80% of the country’s workforce is employed in the agricultural sector, other major industries include oil production, gold mining and cotton ginning.

Stories from in Sudan

Razan Tiagi
Sponsor Girl In Sudan
Razan describes herself as a committed Afro-Arab feminist activist.
She is passionate about sexual and reproductive health and rights and challenging the harmful gender norms that are at the root of issues like female genital mutilation and child marriage. She is a member of the Women Deliver Young Leaders program as well as a Global Youth Influencer with Plan International.

Razan eats, sleeps and breathes gender equality activism. She is a medical student at university in Sudan, and is a key member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association, the largest student-led organization in the world.

Young people like Razan play a critical role at all levels of Plan International USA’s work, both in the U.S. and in our program work abroad. As part of our child-centered community development approach, we work with youth, their families and their communities to identify problems and implement solutions. In this way, young people are more than just program participants. They’re program partners, driving the changes they want to see in their communities.

Sponsored Child In Sudan
Tiagi is a 9-year-old boy with disabilities who is a South Sudanese refugee. He lives in the Al Redais Camp in Sudan, which is home to over 20,000 people.
During the conflict in his home country, he lost both of his parents and fled across the border with his grandmother.
When he arrived at the camp, Tiagi always sat alone feeling shy and afraid, until he was encouraged to attend a child-friendly space run by Plan International Sudan and local partner organization El-ethar.

“Gradually, Tiagi started playing soccer with his peers,” his grandmother says. “Then later, he started to attend all the sessions in the child-friendly space, and learned many skills and became a popular leader and a good friend to all of the children.”

Tiagi’s integration in the child-friendly space encouraged the families of other children with disabilities to send their children to the child-friendly space. In fact, four other children with disabilities have since started attending the child-friendly space and are benefiting from playing and learning with their peers. By integrating with their peers, children with disabilities have been able to gain strong social skills and make new friends.
