Strengthening assistance for child trafficking survivors
Burkina Faso
We work together to support survivors of child trafficking in Burkina Faso.
Due to underfunded education systems, poverty and a lack of employment opportunities, children in Burkina Faso are vulnerable to sexual exploitation, forced labor and recruitment by armed groups.
While national legislation against human trafficking has been passed, it has lacked enforcement and resources for prevention and survivor assistance. What are we doing?
Through the Strengthening Assistance for Child Trafficking Survivors project, funded by the Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Plan International will focus on:
- Providing support to child survivors of trafficking to reintegrate into society.
- Strengthening the capacity of the government, community leaders and civil society to prevent trafficking from occurring and support reintegration of survivors.
- Building awareness of child trafficking through social campaigns in cooperation with local child protection networks.
The project will target girls and boys ages 10-18 in Cascades, Boucle de Mouhoun and North regions of Burkina Faso as these areas experience a high rate of child trafficking, including the emerging trends of trafficking by violent extremist groups. By working across multiple levels of the socio-ecological model, including the family, community and society levels, the protective environment surrounding children will be strengthened. This will include supporting the government-run hotline to report cases, developing a directory of services and providing case management support and legal services to survivors.
Plan will partner with Keoogo, a local organization, to provide medical, legal and psychosocial support to child survivors, and will work with children who are excluded from society to reintegrate.
